Any Ideas on a Romantic Weekend in Late January in Northern CA?
Any Ideas on a Romantic Weekend in Late January in Northern CA?
I totally agree with Time Traveler. You can not do better than Napa Valley. There's a very nice B&B on Washington St. in Yountville, very secluded and quaint. I can not remember the name right now, but it has huge beds, hot tub, huge bathroom. I know it's steps away from the French Laundry. (Do not bother eating there though. I knew someone who worked there. If someone did not like a dish, Keller would come in and tell everyone to leave, as in clear out the restaurant.) Go to Fume' Bistro, Don Giovanni, Celadon, or Cole's Chop House. There's tons of dining in Napa. And if you want to splurge a little, take a hot air balloon ride. We took ours in November and it was amazing. It was through Balloons Above The Valley. You get a discount if you say you saw them online. And if you happen to know anyone remotely in Napa Valley, you can use their address to get an extra discount.1. What is so great about fine dining?5 star dining should be a special treat .. not the norm2. Dining close to the apollo victoria theatre?London Theatre Restaurant Arbutus London - London Theater ... Found in the heart of London's Soho close to many major theatres, Arbutus offers ... Perched along Frith Street in the very heart of Soho, Arbutus is excellently placed ... Almeida Theatre, Ambassadors Theatre, Apollo Theatre, Apollo Victoria ...3. What is proper etiquette while dining out?Place your napkin in your lap before the meal begins. If there is flatware for each course and you are not sure which to use, the safest bet is to start at the outside and work your way in toward the plate. Also, after you use your butter knife, place it horizontally across the top of your dinner plate.4. What is the best and most durable varnish for a dining table top?Sherwin Williams' Wood Classics Waterborne Polyurethane. It is always best to put an oil over an oil or a water base over a water base but since you have mixed oil and water together on the table I believe this product will do the best job5. does it matter the size of kitchen if your dining room is large? How small is "very small"? Is there room for you to work? Is there enough storage - cupboard space, counter space, etc? Is there room for more than 1-2 people there? How many will you have living in the house? Is it possible to open up a wall or otherwise renovate in order to make it bigger? (These last 2 questions need an answer from someone who's qualified to give one. If you are not sure if you are qualified to do so, you are probably not) There's a lot of houses on the market right now, and they are not moving fast. If you are not sure about this one, it does not hurt to keep looking.6. How do you clean a finished wood dining table? If the substance on your table is oil soluble, you can use lemon oil on a soft rag and rub until the sticky area dissolves and is cleaned away. Finish by cleaning the entire table top with lemon oil and wiping it well to clean off the excess. You might also try Murphy's Oil Soap (a liquid just for cleaning wood.) It does an excellent job. Hopefully, the finish on your table has not been damaged by something that partially dissolved the finish leaving a sticky residue. If the lemon oil and Murphy Oil Soap do not clean the table top, you may have to refinish it. If the finish is damaged, you can try something like Formby's 'Refinisher' that partially dissolves the finish and allows you to clean the sticky areas and then reapply a new finish. This should be a last resort, however.7. What is a fine dining restaurant in Indianapolis, IN that is also affordable?Well, great environment for reasonable (15-20ish a plate) is PF Chang's. Weber Grill is good too if you prefer steaks.8. What are some good dining places in Gurnee, IL?I lived in Gurnee for a little while and the pickings are slim. Tony Paisans is a nice Italian at Milwaukee and Washington. Also on that corner (across the street) are Stevens Steakhouse (I've never been) and Tacos El Norte. Tacos El Norte has great food, but is not very upscale. Also, near the mall (Grand and I-294) there are all the usual chains, including Appleby's, Chili's, Ruby Tuesday's and a Rain Forest Cafe, among others. None of these are my favorite, but that's about the extent of what Gurnee has to offer. There are a number of nice places over in Libertyville. Metromix.com is a good source for checking things out.
What Have Been President Obama's Biggest Foreign Policy Mistakes?
Well, I would categorize drone strikes against Americans abroad technically domestic policy. Someone may come along and tell me that would fall under foreign policy, but for now I'll assume that that travesty is technically domestic and not relevant to the question.Realistically, the closing of Gitmo would not have meant anything. Prisoners would have been shuffled into a new secret prison elsewhere- big deal. For me, the decision to let Iran keep the RQ-170 "Beast of Kandahar" drone intact is one of his major failing points. That drone should have been destroyed the second that we knew we had lost control of it. Iran would have been forced to sit on it's collective hands while it claimed to have hacked a US drone- then we blew it to smithereens. We could have almost publicly laughed at them. Claiming to have hacked one of the most classified UAVs of the most technological military in the world? You guys? Jay Leno would have laughed it off.Second- The decision to put Special Forces "advisors" into Uganda. This is starting to sound a lot like the Vietnam conflict all over again. We sent in advisors one day... The Gulf of Tonkin was a natural progression.• Suggested ReadingAre there any Egyptian cities that are now underwater? The ancient city of Thonis, most commonly known as Thonis-Heracleion. It was believed that Thonis and Heracleion were two different cities but later it was found that they are the name of only one city. The remains were explored by a French underater archeologist- Franck Goddio. A tremor is believed to be the cause of the whole city drowning in the water. In early 2000s, a group of archeologists discovered the sunken city, ruins of temples, pottery, jewelery, coins, oil lamps and personal belongings of the people were also found. The city is believed to be founded around 2700 years ago and was a hub for international trade and commerce.A well planned network of canals, harbors, ports, temples and tower houses and all joined together by a network of ferries and bridges throws a light on the fact that the city controlled most of it's maritime traffic. The above image is the Steele of Thonis-Heracleion. It is observed that Thonis (egyptian) and Heracleion (greek) are the names of the same city but different in versions of explaination.Above image shows how tha city was pulled on to the ground. No doubt the excavation of Thonis-Heracleion would have been a tedious task but it stands on the face of the earth again - all thanks to the modern day technology------What is the most important belief that propels your life? Let's share what profound wisdom we have found in our individual lives.Managing risk by looking at the evidence, and then implementing that evidence. Most people do things which aren't in their own best interest because they are emotional, and I am too, as I am a person too of course! But if you face up to the fact you aren't rational, as I did, I can then put checks and balances on myself to stop me from being irrational as much as humanly possible. For example, I gained a lot of passive income by simple:Looking at the academic evidenceInternalizing it (not reading it just once)Importantly, implementing it.com/2018/06/09/6-steps-to-financial-freedom/Right now I am trying to get fitter and fitter. I am not a medical expert unlike my dad, so I can't read technical academic papers. But what I can do is:Read the simplified evidence that somebody with knowledge has put upRead it again to internalize itImplement it by asking myself if I can put in processes (such as having a personal trainer or gym buddy) to make me do it day in day out. It is easy to give up.Its very simple but as Richard Branson said, anybody can make something complex. Simple is far more effective------Why were there dead bodies in the marshes that Frodo, Sam, and Sméagol were attempting to cross? They are the corpses of the fallen Elves, Men and Orcs at the battle of Dagorlad, at the end of the Second Age in the year 3434 (3000 years before the Lord of the Rings). The Last Alliance between Men and Elves, led by Gil-galad for the Elves and Elendil for the Men, marched on Mordor to fight Sauron and met his army there, before the Black Gate. The battle of enormous, involving hundreds of thousands troops and raging for months. The army of the Last Alliance was made of High-Elves from Eriador led by Gil-galad, High-Elves from Rivendell led by Elrond, High-Elves from Lorien led by Amdir, Sylvan Elves from Mirkwood led by Oropher (father of Thranduil and grand-father of Legolas), Men from Arnor and Gondor led by Elendil and his sons Isildur and Anarion, Dwarves from Moria and some other people. The Last Alliance was victorious and entered Mordor where started the siege of Barad-dur, Saurons fortress. In the movie The fellowship of the Ring, the battle in the introduction is this siege, which lasted 7 years and ended with the defeat of Sauron. At the aftermath of the battle of Dagorlad, the place was so much filled with corpses that it became known as the Dead Marshes. King Amdir of Lorien and King Oropher of the Sylvan Elves were among the victims------What are some views on the recent death of IAS officer Mukesh Pandey? If he had a personal problem, he should have taken his time off for a certain period. Well, as mentioned in the video, he loved his wife very much but felt that they were poles apart. Well, in that case, if you are not compatible with each other, then surely you can opt for divorce. Where is shame in it? After all, all this hype around marriage is only a society based rule and the belief that marriages are made in heaven is a pretty fantasy type thinking. Mukesh ji had a fulfilling job, he could have taken a light posting, enjoyed with the people who cared for him instead of living with someone who he felt no happiness with.Men should also learn to be mentally tough when it comes to drawing lines even with their wives and parents. In India, marriage has become more of a social contract with engineers, doctors and govt servants in huge demand. From my own experiences, I can say that marriages based on such factors cannot give complete happiness, after all, they are based on mutually agreed conditions.Again, Indian culture, along with both men and women, has a long way to got to mature.May his death serve us as a reminder that nothing is worth the suicide------Is Trump justified in saying that he has never respected John Brennan? It is probably accurate that Trump never respected John Brennan. Probably the first time that Trump met Brennan (and well as Gen. Clapper) is when they briefed him in the summer of 2016 at the direction of President Obama to talk about Russian interference. Trump ignored it then and ignores it to this day. He probably has no respect for anyone saying that Russia interfered in the election. Is he justified? Well, John Brennan isnt everyones cup of tea. He is a pit bull when it comes to issues, never backs down and will stand up for what he believes is right (even if its politically dumb). Brennan has probably had a more senior role in US counter-terrorism issues for longer than anyone else in the IC. He set up and ran the CTC under President Bush, than was an advisor in the WH and CIA Director under President Obama. Im not sure you can find a senior IC individual who has had such a sustained and deep exposure on counter-terrorism policy and decisions. Its Brennan that systemized our drone policy (so it wasnt ad hoc with multiple back and forth discussions every time a possible target popped up unexpectedly------Do you know anyone who didn't vaccinate their kid(s) and came to regret it?Yes, me.Well, Im a special case.I am 100% in favor of all childhood vaccines. And adult vaccines. And elder vaccines. However, my adult son is 100% anti-needle.So, when he went in for a physical at age 20, and his doctor asked if he wanted a pertussis booster, he said no.Guess what he came down with?Cmon, youll never get it....Yeah. Pertussis. Whooping cough. He missed weeks of work, and never actually got all the way better.Pertussis led to asthma. Chronic asthma led to nasal polyps. Polyps led to cranial bone loss and a deviated septum. Cranial bone loss and a deviated septum have him scheduled for surgery next Tuesday. Surgery for polyps means a lifetime of sinus care he will have to follow or risk a recurrence and more surgery. In the mean time, my husband and I had just had our pertussis boosters for our trip to India, and our younger son had his full roster of shots, so we were fine.We dont know exactly where our son picked up his infection, but Colorado did have a Whooping Cough outbreak that year, due largely to unvaccinated children, so he must have come into contact with one of them------Why do people always accuse George W. Bush of causing loss of American lives in Iraq while the same is not applied for Roosevelt who aided the allies in WWII and ultimately led Hitler to declare war on the US?First of all the reason Hitler declared war on the US was not because of lend-lease, I. E., helping the Brits, it was because he knew he'd have to knock America out of the war if he were to achieve European domination. The invasion of Iraq was a war of choice. US interests and national security weren't threatened. We invaded a sovereign country. In WWII, the Japanese declared on the US after Pearl Harbor and by Germany shortly there after. This was a war for our national security, not for aggrandizement. The outcome of the war often affects how historians view the war. In Iraq, there was the Humpty Dumpty effect. The war ultimately destabilized Iraq , allowing for the fracturing of the country with competing factions of Isis, Kurds, and Iranian backed Shi'ites. The mess from Syria may have been contained if Saddam was still heading Iraq instead of spilling over . Saddam may have also kept Iran in check. "All the Kings horses and all the Kings men couldn't put Iraq back together again." In WWII, the outcome was a stable and prosperous Europe, with Germany having a solid democratic government. Japan threw off its imperialism and formed a democratic, peaceful and prosperous nation. The US had half the world's GNP after the war and reversed the effects of the depression.------I am a Led Zeppelin fan and until now, I was totally unaware of their plagiarism cases. I feel weird. What are your views on this topic? The plagiarism cases don't change the music. The songs remain the same. It's perfectly alright to continue enjoying LZ. Personally, I think the STH plagiarism accusation is BS. The only one that, for me, holds water, is the DaC thing. But still: it doesn't change the music. As far as the blues songs, well, black folks invented rock. A LOT of bands were ripping off black music at the time (Rolling Stones, for instance.) It was par for the course. The Lemon Song was an homage to Robert Johnson, as was Traveling Riverside Blues. Furthermore, a LOT of blues songs are traditional, and there aren't many blues chord progressions.I REALLY don't think LZ meant any harm. And, even if there WAS malicious intent, the music still sounds the same. I've been into LZ since I was about 11 (in 91,) and by the time the plagiarism business came up, it was WAY too late for me to decide I didn't like them because of it.If the plagiarism stuff REALLY bothers you, try to separate art from artist. If you still can't handle it, start listening to Robert Plant's incredible, criminally underrated solo work, both from the 80s and 90s, and the more recent stuff.

How Our Big Fall Led to a Bigger Start
TLDR: Shutting down a startup was really really hard...but it's led to something that feels right. A side project that we built because we wanted it ourselves so badly, where everything we've learned, everything we're good at, all of it is coming together.Commaful, our new storytelling website, feels meant to be. We're excited to announce that we launched into beta today. Go check it out: FeelingsIf you're a founder, you know how I felt. All day, every day, thinking about your startup. In the back of my mind, the biggest questions about our future always loomed. And, oh yes, there were always questions. "Why are the recruiters not liking the candidates we're sending them? How can improve the quality of the candidates we're reaching? What is our value proposition for really strong job candidates who likely have a network?"We had a vision to change the recruiting process. To make recruiting easier. Something my awesome co-founder, Ryan Choi, and I felt super passionate about. Our startup was called TalentTrail, it was eHarmony for jobs (and the co-founder of eHarmony was our adviser). We took candidates and matched them to the best fit companies.Jumping over brick walls, solving hard problems, and trying to realize our vision were things that I LOVED about startup life. It was grueling, but I loved the feeling of making things work and doing what I thought was impossible.I loved thinking about our startup like a chess game. Where we would make the best moves possible to put ourselves in the best position to succeed. Whether it'd be a winning move or losing move, we couldn't know. But that is the beauty of building a startup. Just as it is the beauty of chess.TalentTrail was almost everything to me. The first question people would ask me when they saw me was always, "How is TalentTrail going?" The first thing people would hear when they asked if I was free to hangout was: "Working on TalentTrail." I don't think it surprised anybody when I left USC to focus on TalentTrail. It was a huge part of my identity. But then....we hit THE brick wall.A wall that we could have jumped over. A wall that probably would have a whole new adventure behind it. The details of our shutdown and the reasons/lessons for it are outlined in this post so I won't dive into too much detail on the shutdown. Instead, I'll focus on the mentality. The hardest part was knowing that we could probably solve the problems that were ahead. It's just not the path we believed in. We crafted a hypothesis that our job matching process would streamline recruiting and delight both candidates and employers. Turns out....people didn't like the matching process. We tweaked things and found a way that was growing organically and quickly, but it was not a business that we felt would make a meaningful impact or truly innovate on the space. We had built just another job board.Users didn't love us. They loved the companies on our site. And that wasn't a fun thing to realize. It sucked because we knew the problems of recruiting still existed. It sucked because we knew we would never again feel the joy when we knew somebody landed a great internship. It sucked because we let the people who believed in us down.We were so lucky. All the opportunities we got. All the people who helped us. We didn't deserve the support and help that we got. And we still couldn't make it work.It sucked because it initially made me wonder: "Is it possible that I'm not meant to be a founder?"The Final TestBefore shutting down, we decided to do one last test of user love. We emailed some of our users telling them we shut down. If they responded, weeping about how they loved us, then, perhaps, we missed something. But if our conclusions were correct, that they loved the companies and marketplace, not us, then our users wouldn't care.We didn't want to just sit and refresh our inboxes all day. I knew it would drive me insane. We decided to build something for fun. A project that wouldn't take long to build, but something we would use.We got no replies. No sob stories, no love. This was it.Then... one day....TalentTrail's twitter account stopped tweeting inspirational quotes and job advice....(P.S. shameless plug, follow @commaful on twitter if you want some pure awesomeness)That was how Commaful was born.I had a lot of ideas to write about stuffed into Evernote, but never had the time to write about them. It's not like I had the time to write a novel or anything! I wanted an easy and fun way to share those thoughts. We decided to hack together something that would allow us to share ideas quickly in a way where our friends would love it. 24 hours later, I made the first post and shared it to Facebook:The story is here:We started seeing people sign up. People seemed to like the interaction. We saw people make their first creations.Everything kind of just lined upThe sales process I designed for TalentTrail is the process I used to reach out to influencers. The tactics I used to promote job listings are similar to the ways we promoted the early content. The network of founders we'd met to help find interns are now great people to share their story on the site. Everything seemed to line up perfectly. But more importantly.....Commaful has been so fun to work on. From the people I've met to the community, we've grown. I love using the product. What started as a small project has grown into my entire life. We think that this can be the style and storytelling platform of the future with its simplicity and digestible nature. Our alpha testing has been exciting and today, we are excited to announce:Commaful is now in beta! Come check out a story and share your thoughts! As our community has started to grow, we've realized that the opportunity is so much bigger than the little project we made. In a generation of shorter attention spans (I'm guilty of this, probably why I love Commaful so much), we believe we can pioneer THE millennial storytelling site. Visual, simple, and fun. A home for everything from psychological thrillers to random parodies.I look forward to seeing you on Commaful :) Say hello to me on Commaful, just tag "@sydney" in the comments or a post. Join our amazing community of people sharing awesome stories! There's really something for everyone. Love fanfiction? Well we got something for you! What about poetry? Whatever your creative desires, come share it with us!.·RELATED QUESTIONWhat happens if you inhale carbon dioxide for just a second? One day when I was young and foolish (still in graduate school), we'd gotten a shipment of something on dry ice, and we were playing with it. We'd put some into a lab sink (which are fairly deep) and run hot water in to create a thick fog, which filled the sink and slowly flowed over the edges. The gaseous part of the fog was mostly carbon dioxide, of course, and the mixture was dense enough that you could see waves in the surface if you disturbed it with your hand.So far, not so foolish. Then I thought it would be interesting to stick my head in the fog and see what it looked like. And while my head was in there, I inhaled. You know that burning sensation you get in the back of your nose when you burp after you've been drinking soda? That's carbon dioxide reacting with the moisture in your nasal membranes to form carbonic acid. I had that same feeling, but all the way from my nose down into my lungs. It triggered a cataclysmic coughing fit that brought me to my knees, hanging on to the edge of the sink for support. So that's what happened when I inhaled carbon dioxide. Your mileage may vary.

As adults, we sometimes assume babies should sleep like we do: on a soft, comfy bed, cuddled up with a warm blanket and pillow. However, this is not true. For safety reasons, babies should sleep on a firm surface, cuddled up just in their pajamas or a sleep sack. Do not use blankets, pillows, stuffed toys or bumper pads with a sleeping baby. If you are worried about your baby being cold, use a sleep sack to keep your baby warm. Why? Your baby is not strong enough or coordinated enough to remove soft flimsy items from his or her face. These items increase a baby's risk for suffocation or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Place baby on back, not on side or stomach Until your baby turns one, your baby should be placed on his or her back while sleeping; including during daytime naps. However once your baby has learned to roll over onto his or her stomach while sleeping, you no longer need to roll your baby onto his or her back again during sleep. Why? Babies who sleep on their backs are less likely to die of SIDS than babies who sleep on their stomach or side. When a baby is placed on his or her side, the baby can easily roll onto his or her stomach, putting the baby in an unsafe sleeping position. It is a common myth that babies might choke when sleeping on their backs. However, your baby's airway anatomy and gag reflex will keep this from happening. A firm sleep surface such as a crib, bassinet or pack and play is the safest sleep place for your baby. Never let your baby sleep on a couch or chair. Also, if your baby falls asleep in a car seat, stroller, swing or infant carrier, move your baby to a firm sleep surface. Why? Soft, plushy surfaces can cause curving of an infant's neck and spine, which can make it harder to take a full, deep breath. Infant equipment that is not made for sleeping can put your baby in dangerous positions that restrict airflow. Share your room, not your bed Room sharing is recommended for the first six to 12 months of your baby's life. Place your baby's crib, bassinet or pack and play close to your bed. Why? The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends room sharing because it can decrease the risk of SIDS by as much as 50% and is much safer than bed sharing. For any safety questions, call Sanford Children's Safety Center at (605) 312-8390 or email . Is your baby getting all the sleep needed? Are you? Tent Placement?
My stomping grounds are in central Florida, deep in the subtropical jungles. You do not have much choice, it is under a tree or nothing, so check those trees carefully. If you do find an open prairie that is where everyone else who is out here tonight will be and I like to be stealthy. I like to be far from people. Trees can shield you from rain at first, but then they saturate and then the torrent falls. Rainwater makes branches heavier so falling debris is a problem. The one great benefit is protection from that tropical sun which can burn tarps and tents. Campfire has to be close to the tent because you want your tent in plain sight at all times. Varmints, two and four legged can get nosy. Last thing you want is to finish eating and come back to a destroyed tent. But it has to be far enough that no spark can reach the tent. We have high winds here that can come up out of nowhere. Toilet, has to be fairly close to you, you just can not go stumbling around in the dark carrying a flashlight, tissue paper, spade while bears, gators and snakes can be anywhere. Dig your holes in the day. A flashlight does not overcome the darkness...everything out there can see a whole better than me in the dark. Also, I have a tight sealed container for urinating when leaving the tent just ai not possible. Flat ground is deceiving, it can look dry on the surface and be total mud a few inches down. Sometimes, my favorite stealthy deep pit fire just can not be done. Areas here flash flood real quick and suddenly that flat safe area is under 4 inches of water. Last time, we hiked through an area that looked great for camping, only thing it began to rain and soon we were sloshing through a brand new swamp. Still, you have to choose something, we can not even consider lightning. Camp on a small mound and you increase your chances of a strike. Camp away from it and your tent will soon be submerged from runoff from that mound you turned down.So it is a tradeoff and sometimes you will get unlucky. ShemSeger and others stress the "leave no trace" approach. That is a good rule, I started camping just 18 months ago, came from NYC to Vegas to Florida and although I love it I am always glad to come home. I truly believe that everyone should spend a night or two out there, make them appreciate the benefits of civilization1. how do you set up a tent in the snow??Quickly!2. Should I get a tent in this situation? From all your recent posts, it seems pretty clear that you need a place of your own. It will take a lot of determination to find a reasonable job, and save up enough to put a deposit on a small apartment, but it will be worth it. Do not waste your money on a tent. So, before you become a real "failure to launch" and a burden to your family, make independence your first priority. It's no fun tangling with everybody on a daily basis. Once you are out on your own, you can see them sociably.3. How to repair a canvas camping tent?Rips and tears. To mend small tears, cover the damaged area with cloth repair tape -- ripstop nylon for nylon tents, taffeta for canvas tents. Apply a liberal patch to both sides of the tear, smoothing the edges of the tape carefully to prevent snags and leaks. Coat the edges of the patch with seam sealer, on both sides of the tent. Be sure you are using the right sealer; canvas sealer could damage a nylon tent4. What type of tent is best for a section of the Appalachian trail? The Trail in summer does not require much gear, except to keep out of the rain and the bugs off. You do not really want 3 people cooped up in a tent in summer. Too much condensation from breath. Think mosquito netting. That's cheap and you can rig it up like a tarp. Oh, and bring a tarp too, for the rain. All off-the-shelf stuff, for cheap.
